Grapevine winter cut essentials

Winter pruning of pruned grapevines during pruning should be carried out from mid-December to mid-January. Pruning too early or late will affect their growth and results.

Leave branch length 1, according to the characteristics of the pruning: strong growth, vigorous growth of species, flower buds and higher distribution of nodes, so the branches should be longer cut off, leaving the shoot more than 8 buds; the remaining 3 ~ 7 buds. For example, the growth of Kyoho and other species is stronger, and the distribution and the node of flower buds are higher, so the cuttings of the branches should be longer.

2. Trimming according to the dendrite and the fullness of the buds: In the first year of colonization, the tip thickness is 1 cm, the length of clipping is 100 cm, and if the tip thickness is 0.8 cm, the length is 80 cm, and so on.

Leave the standard to choose to stay in the fine annual branches, this new shoot is generally thick and round, the pith is small, the internodes are short, the joints are raised, and the branches are yellow-brown and red-brown. For long internodes and large piths, small long shoots and flat shoots with buds and eyelids should be sparse or cut short and should not be retained.

The pruned portion of the grapevine is larger in the pith part, the tissue is looser, and the moisture evaporates easily. Therefore, when trimming, the clipping should be 2 to 4 cm away from the bud, in order to prevent evaporation of water from the buds and cause dry stems to increase.
