Genetically modified crops "retain" pesticides

New evidence was added to the impact of genetically modified crops on the environment and once again aroused the worries of experts. A few days ago, Italian scientists pointed out in a recently published journal entitled "Pesticides, Ecosystems and Environment" that a new generation of genetically modified crops may have a greater impact on wildlife than was originally expected. After being genetically modified, these crops are resistant to herbicides and at the same time secrete toxins that kill pests. However, scientists have found that when these two effects are combined, herbicides stay in the soil for nearly twice as long. Cesare Accinelli and colleagues at the University of Bologna in Italy said that this is the first research project to investigate how the two properties of genetically modified crops interact. These genetically modified crops produce Bt tocin. Kills pest larvae in the soil, such as corn borer; it is also resistant to the herbicide "Zhongcao Ning" and glufosinate. However, in laboratory studies, Accinelli et al. found that when these crops die, the Bacillus thuringiensis toxin protein that remains in the soil through the decaying plant roots and other tissues can affect the rate of decomposition of previously applied herbicides. For example, Zhencao Ning takes 24 days to break down half; and in the absence of Bacillus thuringiensis toxin protein, it only takes 14 days; oxadiaphos takes 14 days, but it only takes 8 days.
