American study: Eating healthier in a bright environment

When eating out, facing a crowd of people will inevitably eat more food and lose weight. But if you choose to eat in a brighter place, the resistance to culinary temptations can be stronger. This is the discovery of a US University of South Florida study.

The researchers investigated the dining conditions of 160 customers in four restaurants. Half of these customers ate in a well-lit environment and the other half ate in a dimly lit environment. The researchers found that the first group of customers loved foods like fish and vegetables that had relatively low calories. According to sales records, the calorie intake of food in the latter group of customers was 39% higher than that in the previous group. The researchers then let 700 college students dine in a bright or dark room and found that eating in darker rooms was more likely to eat more calories. The researchers concluded based on this that eating in a bright environment makes it easier to make healthy choices, which may be because this environment makes people more alert. One of the researchers, Brian Wansink, said that eating in a dim environment is also good, allowing people to slow down and eat slowly.
