Today is the National Day of Love, this year's theme is: safe use of the ear to protect hearing.

There are 1.1 billion adolescents around the world who are at risk of permanent hearing loss because they listen to music "too long and too loud." The threat posed by music players, concerts and bars is especially serious.

The WHO pointed out that 43 million young people aged 12-35 years old already have hearing loss, and the number is still increasing. The WHO says that half of this age group is from middle- and high-income countries and is exposed to high-volume personal audio equipment. At the same time, 40% of people are exposed to clubs and bars with damaging high volume. The proportion of hearing impairment in adolescents has risen from 3.5% in 1995 to 5.3% in 2006.

WHO advice

Dr. Etienne Krug, head of the WHO Injury Prevention Program, said: "We are trying to raise awareness of hearing impairment problems. People don't pay enough attention to it and have caused many potential damages that we can easily prevent."

“It is very important to adjust the volume. The personal music player should be used within 1 hour per day. There is still much to do to reduce the noise exposure.”

"This is a rough suggestion, not accurate to the minute, for those who spend 10 hours a day listening to MP3 need to wake up. But for too high volume, an hour may be too much."

Safe hearing level

WHO recommends: Do not listen to music for more than 1 hour a day

Safe listening time recommended by WHO:

85 decibels – noise in the car – 8 hours

90 decibel – mower worker – 2 hours and 30 minutes

95 decibels – motorbike (average) – 47 minutes

100 decibels – car horn or subway – 15 minutes

105 decibels – noisy rock concert – 28 seconds

120 decibels – Vu Zula or whistle – 9 seconds

The WHO recommends that the volume be empirically adjusted to below 60% of the maximum volume.

When you are out on a train or plane, you can use the noise canceling headphones to listen to music, but the volume should be lower.

Earplugs should be worn in noisy places, and it is recommended to stay away from the stage while watching the show.

“We realize that there are some contradictions and struggles. Just like alcohol consumption, there are so many risk factors associated with happiness, and we can't give up, but we must remind everyone,” Dr Krug said.

At the same time as the call to the individual, WHO recommends that the government and manufacturers also take action.

The club should provide quiet rooms and provide earplugs free of charge. Headphone manufacturers should limit the volume, and the government should introduce a corresponding restriction bill.

Paul Breckel, executive director of the Hearing Loss Charity Event, said: "When listening to high-decibel music, for every 3 decibels, to ensure safety, you should reduce your listening time by half." For example, at 88 decibels, 4 hours. It is safe, but at 91 decibels, it can only be 2 hours.

“I hope that music lovers will consider the long-term risks that can be caused by listening to high-volume music above 85 decibels with a personal music player. Long-term exposure may also cause tinnitus. Remember that a good noise-cancelling earphone can bring different ."
