Researchers analyze the genome of resistant Trichoderma
Researchers at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station will soon begin the sequencing of the genome of a resistant fungus used to protect crops. The sequencing of this fungal genome is of great importance to both the agricultural and pharmaceutical industries. People already know some antibiotic-related genes, but there are other genes in Trichoderma that are responsible for the production of atypical compounds that may be novel antibiotics. By sequencing the fungus, researchers will be able to create new versions of the fungus that can protect farm crops from disease infestation. This will reduce the use of pesticides and other chemicals used in the growing season. If we can find a specific gene that can induce crop resistance, it will help the greenhouse planting industry to solve the problem of seedling rot.
