The National Biotechnology Information Center's genetic database is a world-recognized and authoritative genetic database. On August 10, the total number of peanut ESTs and peanuts registered in the database reached 7538 and 479 respectively, but nearly 60% of them were from the Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences in China. Recently, the High-tech Research Center of the Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences registered 4,406 peanut gene expression sequence ESTs in a one-time database with the National Center for Biotechnology Information, and registered a total of 270 peanut genes. The move marked an important progress in the study of peanut functional genomics and it has ranked among the best in the world. Genomics research is one of the most cutting-edge fields in biological research, and it is a long-term strategy for a country to develop science and technology and economy. The construction of full-length cDNA library, large-scale sequencing and functional prediction analysis is one of the important means to understand the gene expression of organisms and acquire new genes. Bi Yuping, director of the High-tech Research Center of Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and a researcher of doctoral tutor Bi Yuping have formed a research team from more than 10 experts inside and outside the United Nations in 2003, relying on the high-level genomics research platform of Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Crop and Livestock Breeds Improvement Biotechnology. In the past three years, a full-length cDNA library of immature seeds of the main cultivar “Luhua 14†was constructed and extensively sequenced. At present, more than 11,000 cDNA sequences have been sequenced and more than 5,500 cDNA sequences have been BLASTed. 2100 single-copy sequences and more than 600 sequence clustering results have been obtained. Peanuts are important grain and oil crops and energy plants. At present, China's total output and export of peanuts rank first in the world. In 2005, exports accounted for 42% of the world's peanut market. Shandong is a major producer of peanuts, and its annual sown area, yield, total output, processing, and export rank first in the country. The Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences aimed at the frontiers and hotspots of international research and conducted a large-scale research on functional genomics of peanuts. It has made outstanding contributions to the promotion of genetically-targeted improvement of peanuts and the cultivation of new varieties of high-yield, high-quality peanuts.
