How to correct the polarizer of a polarizing microscope?

In actual operation, the vibration directions of the upper and lower polarizers of the polarizing microscope are orthogonal to each other, or east-west and north-south directions, respectively, which coincide with the horizontal and vertical directions of the eyepiece crosshairs. Sometimes only one lower polarizer is used to observe, and the direction of vibration of the lower polarizer must be determined, so the polarizer must be corrected during operation.

(1) Inspection of eyepiece crosshairs

Generally check whether the eyepiece crosshairs are orthogonal and whether they are consistent with the vibration direction of the upper and lower polarizers. At the same time, select a piece of cleaved black mica, move to the center of the eyepiece crosshair, and cleave the cleavage parallel to the crosshair. Wire, record the number of scales of the download platform, then turn the object table so that the cleavage slit is parallel to the other crosshair, and count the number of scales of the download stage. The difference between the two scales is 90°, indicating that the crosshairs are orthogonal.

(2) Determination and correction of the vibration direction of the lower polarizer

The biomica is generally used to check the vibration direction of the lower polarizer because the biotite is a widely distributed transparent mineral that is characteristic under single polarized light. First find a piece of cleavage and clear black mica, move to the center of the eyepiece crosshairs, launch the upper polarizer, turn the stage for one week, observe the change of the color of the biotite, because the biotite absorbs the vibration light in the cleavage direction the strongest. So when the dark mica color reaches the deepest, the direction of the cleavage slit is the vibration direction of the lower polarizer.

(3) Correction of orthogonal of upper and lower polarizers

After the direction of the lower polarizer is corrected, remove the sheet and push the upper polarizer to see if the field of view is completely black, that is, whether it is in the extinction state. If it is all black, it means that the vibration directions of the upper and lower polarized lights are orthogonal to each other. Otherwise, the upper polarizer must be calibrated by rotating the upper polarizer to the darkest of the field of view. When turning, you must first loosen the locking screw of the upper polarizer, and then tighten it after correcting.
